Classes Earn Hundreds of Books for Schools in Need
Scholastic, Inc. issued a challenge in September 2004 to have classes read one hundred books by the end of December. Then Scholastic would donate one hundred books to a school in need across America. It was impressive to see our students grab hold of this goal and go after it with gusto! They were so excited to help those less fortunate. Classes from Pre-kindergarten to Eighth Grade read their one hundred books - and with our small classes, that is no small feat. (The Junior High class of ten students read two hundred books). The "Classroom Care Program" was a great success at Ivy Hall!
Ivy Hall Re-establishes National Spelling Bee in Utah
For many years, the Deseret News sponsored the National Scripps Spelling Bee for the state of Utah. In 2000, when the Olympics were coming to Salt Lake City, they dropped their sponsorship.
Several years passed, and no one had decided to sponsor the Bee. Utah was one of three states not participating in the National Scripps Spelling Bee! No school had chosen to rectify the situation and pursue a new sponsor. Because of our academic focus, in October of 2003 we asked Ann Moffat, who had two children at Ivy Hall, to look into re-establishing the Bee. She found out that only newspapers can be sponsors.
We decided to have her first contact the Daily Herald, our local newspaper. Fortunately, they were excited to be involved and included all schools within their circulation area. After several months of meetings and submitting the application, the Daily Herald was an official Scripps sponsor and Utah was once again part of the National Spelling Bee.
In March 2004, a Spelling Bee was held at Neways in Springville. Both private and public schools were involved, along with home schoolers. About one hundred students participated. The winner went to Washington, D.C. to compete.
We were excited to make a difference and again have Utah involved in such a worthwhile academic program.
We continue to participate in this Bee and appreciate local support.
